Sobre Thun
Thun is the largest city in the Bernese Oberland and one of Switzerland's most beautiful medieval towns. Built by the Dukes of Zähringen in the 12th century, it straddles the Aare River where it flows out of Lake Thun. The old town's covered walkways (Obere Hauptgasse) sit above the shops below — an architectural peculiarity found almost nowhere else in Switzerland, where pedestrians walk at first-floor level over a lower street.
Thun Castle (Schloss Thun), built around 1190, towers above the old town on a hill and houses a historical museum spanning four floors. The town is famous for its roses — parks, window boxes, and public beds bloom from May through October. Lake Thun stretches 17.5 km southward toward Spiez and Interlaken, serviced by historic paddle steamers running since 1835.
