Sunrise Hike — Harder Kulm
Leave before dawn, watch Interlaken light up at summit
Harder Kulm rises directly above Interlaken and gives the most comprehensive panorama in the Berner Oberland — both lakes, the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in a single frame. Konrad leads the pre-dawn ascent so you arrive at the summit exactly as the sky turns pink over the mountains.
The trail is steep but well-maintained, and the reward is absolute. On the descent, Interlaken wakes up below you. Konrad brings thermos coffee for the top.
Itinerary
Meet at Harder Kulm funicular station
Dark, quiet, and cold. Headlamps on. Konrad confirms the day's cloud cover report — the hike is worth doing in all but total overcast.
Ascent begins
The trail switchbacks steeply through pine forest. 1.5–2 hours to the summit. Konrad sets a sustainable pace.
Summit arrival before sunrise
The sky begins to lighten over the Brienz valley first. Position chosen for the best unobstructed Jungfrau view.
Sunrise over the Bernese Alps
The Eiger catches the first orange light. Both lakes visible below. Konrad pours coffee from the thermos.
Descent to Interlaken
Back down at a relaxed pace. Konrad points out flora and geology on the descent. The café at the base opens at 09:00.
The region
Harder Kulm (1,322 m)
The "Two Lakes Viewpoint" — Thunersee to the west, Brienzersee to the east, both Jungfrau and the valley below in a single sweep.
Interlaken
The town lies on the narrow strip of land between the two lakes, visible in its entirety from the summit.
