Über Meiringen
Meiringen is the eastern gateway to the Bernese Oberland, where the Haslital valley opens up at the Aare River's upper course. The town claims two unlikely distinctions: it is the birthplace of the meringue dessert and the fictional death site of Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle set Holmes's battle with Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls above Meiringen.
The Aareschlucht (Aare Gorge) is the town's most dramatic attraction — a 1.4 km limestone canyon where the Aare River has carved passages just 1m wide between walls rising 50m overhead.
